Without the school scholarships provided by HSCV these wonderful children would be forced to stop attending school. For only $50 you can sponsor an at risk child with a year of school fees. In return you will receive a photo, biography, and have the opportunity to exchange letters, pictures and drawings with the child. Donate $50 now, using paypal's safe and secure network For an additional $100 a year you can sponsor the child's family with a monthly donation of rice. from Annetta De Vet Taking steps On September 1st the Family Assistance program took its biggest step. After months of research, development, and introducing the program to the proper government agencies the rice program finally began. Twenty-one families received a month’s supply of rice. Each month, depending on the size and situation of the family, families will either received 20 kg or 30 kg of rice. A total of 540 kg was donated to them families, at a cost around $150 USD. The main purpose of this program is to provide enough relief to a family to allow them to use their money to create a higher standard of living for their family. The families will be re-evaluated on a 6 month to a 12 month basis. At that time it will be determined if the family is still in need of the assistance. This program has great potential for the families and for HSCV. It is a direct program that deals with the core problem of hunger. The potential for expansion of the program is only limited by the budget. I hope to begin to expand this program in December or January. We have finally made solid progress on Thang’s heart; I only hope I can say the same for his sister Van Anh by the end of the month. Thang will have open heart surgery on Thursday September 9th. The Heart Hospital is very nice and I have great confidence in their ability. He will check into the hospital on Tuesday. We have made some progress with Van Anh. Thanks to Chuck’s diligence we have finally located a doctor that is willing operate on her legs. The surgeon is from Ho Chi Minh City, during a very busy visit to Hanoi two weeks ago he agreed to examine her. However, he wants her heart to be operated on first. His main concern is her heart would not be strong enough to handle the surgery. However, the heart surgeon wants her legs to be operated on first. His main concern being her lack of mobility would hinder her recovery. Thankfully Dr. Ha (of the Hope Center and NIP) agreed to accompany us at the consultation at the Hanoi Heart Hospital. She was able to convince the surgeons that she would provide intensive rehabilitation at her clinic. Van Anh’s mobility has drastically increased since she has been attending daily sessions at her clinic. The second concern of the heart surgeons is the severity of her scoliosis. They worry that her repertory system may be too weak to withstand the surgery. Last week she was taken to Bac Mai Hospital to have her lungs tested. Now we have to wait for the surgeons at the Hanoi Heart Hospital to review the tests and hopefully at that point they will approve the surgery. In theory,
two months after her heart surgery Van Anh will have surgery on her legs.
Check back soon for the next update. - Annetta -
