Auditory Assistance Program

Current Projects

In Vietnam the hearing impaired are often treated as mentally impaired. Services to treat them are limited and those that are available are too costly for most families. The result is that the future of many hearing impaired children is incredibly bleak.

The goal of HSCV's Auditory Assistance Program (AAP) is to identify children with probable hearing deficiencies. After these children have been identify HSCV locates a group willing to test these children, whether a NGO or a hospital in Vietnam. If it is than determined the problem is treatable, the necessary steps will than be taken.

In the spring of 2002 HSCV was introduced to a facility that cares for mentally disabled children. In observing these children it appeared that some children may not be mentally impaired but rather only hearing impaired. In this regard, HSCV contacted the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Department at Brigham Young University. These fine people have been doing wonderful work in Vietnam for a number of years. In 2002, in addition to their normal activities, they tested and provided hearing aids for a number of hearing impaired children HSCV was working with from the Hoai Duc district in Ha Tay province. They have once again agreed to be of assistance by testing the hearing of children living in these institutions. HSCV will attempt to provide hearing aids or corrective surgery for those children that could benefit. If our suspicions are correct some of these children are being inappropriately treated. They are being treated as if they are mentally impaired when they are not. It is hard to imagine the frustration and sorrow that a normally intelligent child must feel when confined to an institution for the mentally impaired. By implementing the appropriate corrective procedure to allow these children to hear their lives could be radically changed. They may be able to leave these institutions, return to their families, be educated and live happy and productive lives. We hope to assist in making this happen.
